The Purpose of Weddings

What is the reason why people decide to get married? Weddings have long been a part of society, and its purpose evolves with every culture, generation, and religion. But, wherever you go, communities usually erupt with joy and festivity whenever there is a marriage.

In the past, the ceremony of binding the lives of two different individuals was a political act of showcasing the coming together of two nations. These countries had either promised to help each other develop, or to aid one another in times of war. Sometimes, parents would give their daughter's hand to someone they were indebted to. Some cultures would also reward their local hero with the most beautiful maiden in the village as his wife after his victory in a battle. Others also practiced arranged marriages, where the bride and groom were promised to each other when they were just babies.

Today, the purpose for tying the knot has changed with the modern times. There are still some societies that stick to their traditions of how to decide and celebrate unions. But, generally, men and women decide to have a wedding because they want to be with a partner who can provide them with a family and companionship.

Nowadays, weddings are still considered as one of the favourite social events. They are celebrated in various ways, but always end with one purpose, which is the unification of two individuals.
